At Church of the Resurrection, we are experimenting with a new ministry of adaptive worship, designed for individuals with special needs and their families and friends.  We welcome your presence and participation.

On the first Sunday of the month at 4 pm, we gather in the parish hall at Church of the Resurrection/Vineland.  The parish hall space is open and safe, and the building is handicap accessible.  A community meal follows the service.

What is adaptive worship?  Adaptive worship welcomes all forms of physical and vocal response.  This service has scripture and storytelling that includes spoken and visual cues, therapeutic play for the response, and a simplified prayer for Holy Communion.  Gathering and dismissal rituals help with transitioning.  This family worship service is offered for those for whom conventional worship may be difficult, including those on the Autism Spectrum.

Several congregations are exploring this approach to worship.  A few resources are listed below for your review.

Here’s an article from the Episcopal Church’s national website:

Alternative worship services extend welcome to special-needs children and their parents

Our worship relies on an approach to worship with special needs individuals called “Rhythms of Grace.”  You may be interested in looking at their website.

The service includes a story-telling approach to Scripture called “Godly Play.” You can review an example of this approach to Scripture presentation in this telling of the Parable of the Good Shepherd.

Another approach to adaptive worship is called All God’s Children (AGC).  You might enjoy this AGC worship experience at the Episcopal Church in Budd Lake.

Please feel free to contact our pastor, the Rev. Ellen Rutherford, by e-mail (ecrutherford@juno.com) or by telephone (609-319-9234), if you have questions and/or suggestions for our worship together.  We appreciate your interest and look forward to hearing from you.

Church of the Resurrection / Trinity Episcopal Church, Vineland, New Jersey, is a Christ-centered congregation, in the Anglican tradition, with a mission to reach out to a diverse community as a beacon of faith, hope, and love. We express this mission through the ministries of worship, education, outreach, stewardship, and service in Jesus' name.
